Workers Cottage, Booterstown

This project comprised the refurbishment and extension of a 19th century cottage (a Protected Structure), originally of the Pembroke Estate, in Booterstown, Co. Dublin. The original, modest, workers cottage had previously been extended with a poorly built and badly planned 1960s structure to the rear, which left much of the interior with little sunlight or relationship to the garden. The new extension was conceived as a light-filled, timber post-and-beam pavilion, linked to the original cottage in a manner that shows a clear distinction between old and new. The site strategy was based on wrapping around a sun-filled courtyard, capturing as much light and solar gain as possible.
